The problem of Hair Loss
The physiology of balding has challenged the most entrepreneurial of scientists. Despite an improbable collaboration between commercial forces and scientific interest, generating new hair remained far from possible.
In fact, various scientific publications have printed findings that include both stem-cell research and 3-D printing, with the objective of creating a person’s actual hair and then inserting it into his or her scalp—in large quantities.
“For a long time, we’ve been saying this is 10 years away,” says Robert Bernstein, a dermatologist in Manhattan who specializes in hair transplantation. “But now it actually might be less.”
Indeed, the answer lies in generating new hair. This science is advancing in parallel with other developments in cell therapy, the new medicine where therapies are prepared from a person’s own stem cells. Thus, pancreatic cells might replace those cells that cannot create insulin in people with type 1 diabetes.
Moreover, immune cells are being applied to attack tumors. Nerve cells can be applied to spinal-cord injuries. Hair follicles can be applied to hairless skin. Thus, using cells from a person’s own body lowers the risk that the immune system will attack the new substance.
3-D printing biological material
Meanwhile, Angela Christiano, a professor of genetics and dermatology at Columbia University, has tested 3-D printing to produce a Jell-O mold that binds the follicle and dermal papillae together as they develop into hair. Furthermore, Christiano indicated the results in the journal Nature Communications last December : “ the ability to regenerate an entire hair from cultured human cells will have a transformative impact on the medical management of different types of alopecia, as well as chronic wounds.”
Women’s Hair Loss
Indeed, Christiano has an autoimmune disorder. It caused her body to attack the hair cells on her head. She elaborates that: “plenty of attention regarding hair loss is focused on men, meanwhile as many 30 million women in the United States experience thinning of their hair. “
Robert Bernstein, a dermatologist in Manhattan who specializes in hair transplantation provided further insight. Besides, he believes the idea of a biodegradable synthetic guide is the most promising approach out there. “It’s a huge breakthrough,” he says. “There are many other factors that have to be worked out, but this certainly is really exciting.”
